The day your baby is born, your life changes. Forever. This day is just as important as your wedding day! And you likely invested in a professional photographer to capture those special moments. My clients have described the day they gave birth as “Life-changing,” “The hardest thing I have ever done, and of which I am the proudest,” “One of the most important days in our lives. It bonded my husband and I in a new way.”

No iPhone image can do justice this special day for your family; this is a day to be documented for you by a professional.

I often hear, “We’re really interested in birth photography… but we might just have a friend take photos to save money.” Or, “My husband doesn’t get why he can’t just snap a few shots between the birth…”

With permission, my clients have allowed me to share a few of the photos that were taken by family/friends at the same births that I attended as their professional Birth Photographer and/or Doula. Thank you to each family for trusting me to be a part of your birth, and for allowing me to share these images in the hope of illustrating the value of hiring a professional birth photographer. If you haven’t already done so, please read my post on Five Reasons to Hire a Birth Photographer: “A birth photographer is trained and experienced in how to capture the best-possible images for you; from choosing the right angles, to the lighting, to capturing all the small details, as well as all the time it takes to edit and compile your birth story, a professional birth photographer is equipped with the necessary tools it takes to beautifully capture your birth.”

I am truly passionate about my job; I invest my heart and soul into my photography. I am beyond honored each time a family entrusts me to capture their birth story.

One of my favorite images to capture postpartum is the first embrace between dad and baby. The last thing a mother wants to do right after giving birth is making sure that moment is documented; often, by herself! I anticipate this important moment, and I intentionally capture it from multiple angles.

Families often like to have their birth space low-lit, which means potentially difficult lighting situations. This is why I have invested in equipment that is made especially for low-light situations.  Camera flashes are not recommended around newborns due to potential eyesight damage, but I use a professional flash, which allows me to “bounce” my light source without causing distraction to a laboring mother, and without any risk to a baby’s eyes. Even in dimly lit situations, I am experienced and prepared to capture your birth story without disturbing the peace of you birth space.

After baby is born, parents are often eager to share with the world the news of their new arrival. The easiest way to do this is by snapping a quick phone image, and uploading it to Facebook. With this in mind, each of my birth packages include a few edited digital files within 24 hours to use as your official birth announcement.

One of my birth co-workers nicknamed me “The Birth Photographer Ninja!” Having photographed several births, I am always thinking “ten steps ahead” about where I need to (unobtrusively) place myself in order to capture all the important details and special moments that you want to remember. I take the time to document all the important details from creative angles. Spokane Birth Photographer, Why Hire a birth photographer, Esther Edith Photographer and Doula Spokane, Coeur d

On the morning of this wonderful homebirth, I received a text saying mama’s labor had started, and then slowed down again, so everyone was heading home to give her some time and space (even dad headed out to work), and we all planned to return when things picked up again. A few hours later, I got the call to go back. The midwives had barely just made it there in time to catch baby, the doula was still on her way over, and dad was on his way home.  Everything happened rather quickly, and unexpectedly (as births do), and by the time I arrived, baby was earth side, and still attached to his magnificent, pulsing cord (which you will see below). These first three images were taken seconds after dad met baby for the first time. Shortly afterwards, mama indulged in a warm, herbal bath with baby. I am thrilled to have captured some raw, beautiful images from this sweet family’s birth story; thank you, K family, for inviting me to be a part of your special day. ♥

You might remember seeing some photos of this sweet family’s home waterbirth. I supported Florines and Chris as they brought their first baby earth side, in the comfort of their home, attended by the wonderful midwives of Alternative Birth Care. Florines recently shared this very generous review:

“Any woman can relate that a first time birth specially if it is homebirth can be a very beautiful and a stressful time. With the support of my husband, family, friends, and my mid-wife I thought I had everything I needed for this birth. However, I wanted this day to be very special, and I certainly wanted to cherish it with beautiful photography. But who to choose? I went on a quest for a photographer who can understand and respect the process of a home birth and that would not make it stressful for me. So it was, I found Esther searching the web and truly it was the perfect match. Since the first time I met with Esther, I automatically clicked with her. Not only was she a photographer but a Douala as well, truly all the signs were pointing into hiring her. To further this “miracle” as I like to call it, Esther happened to know my mid-wife. I talked to my mid-wife of what she knew about Esther, and she had nothing but to say nice things of her. There was no doubt left, I wanted Esther to be part of this beautiful moment in my life. Her care and attentiveness before, during, and after the birth were far beyond from what words can express, for it was like she was that old friend you always have that one can rely on. Anytime I needed something, Esther was available and always ready to do things will love and care. She took the time to be there for me, bringing me my favorite dessert, and above all she shared the labor pains with me always keeping calm yet understanding my fatigues. During the birth, she carried herself with such delicacy that one can hardly tell when she is taking pictures. For she takes modest photos, and is very professional in this are of her job. Esther personifies a very solicitous, loving, giving, attentive, person that would ease the process and help you create a stress free environment during the beautiful moment of your birth. Just remember it is good to have that friend that you can always rely on! I never though I was going to need a Doula when my midwife told me my husband said will be fine because the midwife is coming with and assistant but when the time came having Esther it was such a blessing we felt so sorry when we found out she was moving because we set out minds to have her in all of our future births.” ~ Florines

Florines and Chris, it was an honour and privilege to be invited into your birth space; thank you for trusting me to support you through such a special event, and congratulations on the birth of your beautiful daughter.
